So I got to actually see this actual painting in actual real life and with all the actual details which means every single hair on the little dogs body!!! I was pretty happy because in reproductions you can’t see how much the dog is smiling or how it almost GLOWS. Garzoni is known for her still lifes and this painting was in a cabinet along with quite a few of her still life paintings in the Palatine gallery at the Pitti Palace in Florence.

What is even going on here? There is an empty teacup and two flies have landed on the intact biscotti while the other biscotti is a bit broken. Garzoni used tempera on parchment and I am looking forward to trying out this medium soon.

This is an image of my work in progress. Painting for 7 hours a day for 2 weeks I was able to block in the painting and finish the faces and hands of the figures. I am not sure if I will ‘finish ‘ it as I learnt so much from the process and techniques that I just want to get on with my own paintings. It is amazing how close you feel to an artwork and the artist when you examine it intently over a period of time. It was really, really hard and painstaking work but so worth it.

I will post a picture of the ‘finished’ work soon.
